 About the Hy Peskin Collection
Our Family owned official HY PESKIN website (launched on December 2010) is dedicated to the photographic Art of Hy Peskin. Our goal is to showcase Peskin photography and to give the legacy and legend of Hy Peskin eternal life by sharing it with the world.
Hy Peskin the "sportographer" was the first photographer hired by Sports Illustrated when it launched as a premier sports magazine. He, Peskin shot the first action, color photograph, had 42 covers and accomplished 634 assignments for SI and more for the Saturday Evening Post, This Week, Time, Sports, Colliers, etc. Some of his photos were chosen to be among the best sports photographs of the 20th Century.
Peskin was also famous as a photojournalist with covers in Life, Look, This Week, Playboy, Saturday Evening Post and more, including The Memorable Kennedy Collection, a notable part of history and respected worldwide.
On our site, pictures of that historic 4th of July weekend that contributed to the fascination and folklore of the JFK era, these pictures, was the first time there was an up close at the personal life and love affair of a politician who subsequently became the President. The world fell in love with this Royal Family who manifested the American Dream at that dramatic time of change in our history. Hy Peskin captured the very essence of the moment and the fairy tale like story that went along with it. From that point, politics took on a new image with an up close and personal look at the Presidential Candidate.
It was not known that Peskin adored Fine Art as much as Sport and that led him to create a new distinguished genre of artistic sportography, further more, in between his busy schedule on assignments Hy took incredible pictures of pure Art and beauty.
In 1966 Peskin laid aside his phenomenal reputation as a photographer for the sake of philanthropy and formed the Academy of Achievement, thus never bringing to light and life his independent work as an artist. To learn more about a truly great man who lived two incredible and unusual lives in one lifetime please see our Bio page.

The sports collection represents a cross section of time, history and events in a variety of sports including baseball, football, basketball, golf, boxing and many more. The sports photographs of Hy Peskin are like a walk through the history annuals of sport. Beside the extent of his work, no one has ever captured movement and emotion of the moment in sports like Hy Peskin.
Among the most famous sports photograph are the Ben Hogan taking a 1 iron to the green at the 72nd hole of the 1950 US Open and the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field that helped make the Dodgers famous and helped establish Hy's reputation as a one-of-a-kind photographer. His other baseball pictures featured many of the baseball greats of that era including Jackie Robinson, Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio, Hank Aaron and many more.
Hy Peskin's techniques of speed and timing with the camera, and his positions and proximity to the event according to his 'almost in the scene' approach, was exemplified at boxing matches. One of his pictures of Carmen Basillio with his face swollen and eyes puffy was the inspiration for a similar scene in Sylvester Stallone's movie Rocky.
